The surprise of working from behind
You work on the side you can't see and discover the result on the other. A genuinely different kind of making.

Lay gold leaf on the back of a plate, and a landscape no one else will ever own appears on the front. Learn it first-hand from the artisan himself.
The ExperienceThe Experience
The pattern on this glass plate is left transparent. From the back, you layer gold, silver, copper or iridescent leaf wherever you like. With every piece the pattern changes — and from the front, only the design glows. Same motif, a different plate for every guest.
No drawing skill needed. The hard part isn't painting — it's choosing.

Why it's special
You work on the side you can't see and discover the result on the other. A genuinely different kind of making.
Pattern, size (S/M/L), leaf colour, placement — endless combinations. No two plates are ever alike.
Kuroe lacquer artist Mr. Fujii spends about 45 minutes talking you through the story behind the craft, then shows the tools right in front of you.
The artisan checks every plate and applies the final protective finish, so first-timers end up with a piece they'll proudly display.
Food touches only the glass, so knives and forks are fine. Put it on the table every day.
Your finished plate arrives in a paulownia-wood box about 2 days later at your hotel or home (domestic shipping included). Keep travelling light.
Patterns & Leaf
Start by choosing a pattern. Here are four favourites; other designs are available on request.

Peonies and temari balls glow gold against a deep, translucent red. A festive plate that lifts any celebration table.

Drifting maple leaves, coloured by the way you layer the leaf. An entire autumn mountainside, held on one plate.

Mt. Fuji and glittering pine needles in lacquer black. Depending on your leaf, dawn or dusk — Japan's archetypal view.

Bamboo drawn in slender strokes of gold — calm yet resolute, striking under both sweets and sashimi.
* Available designs may vary by season (e.g. crackle, dragon) — please ask when booking.

Your Day
Begin with a relaxed talk with Mr. Fujii himself in the gallery: the history of Kuroe lacquer, makie and haku-e, and why he pairs glass with lacquer. Knowing the story first changes the way you see your own plate.
Choose your pattern and size (S / M / L), then your leaf — gold, silver, copper or iridescent. Cut it with a special blade, place it on the back with bamboo chopsticks and press it in. The more particular you are, the longer you can take.
While the artisan takes over the finishing, wander the gallery freely and admire his works up close — anything you love can be purchased. A commemorative photo closes your visit.

The Artisan
“The leaf becomes light.
The light becomes landscape.”
Makie — decorating lacquer with gold — has been refined in Japan since the Heian era. Building on that tradition, Mr. Fujii created a fresh expression: haku-e, “leaf painting.” In your session he explains the history and shows the tools in person, so it's more than sticking foil — it's time spent with the maker, the part of the trip you'll remember.
After the trip
Food touches only clear glass; the leafwork rests safely beneath it.
